There are two main types of laminate that determine its resistance to scratches, bumps, and burnout: HPL and DPL.

HPL (high pressure laminate) is a specially manufactured layer, up to one millimeter thick, which is highly durable even when separated from the board.

DPL, (Direct Presuure laminate) in turn, is an ordinary paper impregnated with melamine. It can be quite strong, but still relatively thin.
